Wide Zone Wk

Breakdown

Wide Zone Wk is a run play out of Singleback Wing Pair that sends the ball carrier laterally toward the weak side behind a zone blocking scheme that flows in unison to the play side. The offensive line and wing tight ends reach block and combo up to the second level, giving the HB a wide track to press the edge before finding a crease. This is a run play designed to attack gaps created by second level defenders flowing too fast, and the primary read progression is backside cutback lane first, then the bounce to the alley if the edge defender gets sealed.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard down the line, this is the exact overpursuit Wide Zone Wk is designed to exploit with the cutback. Stacked fronts with a linebacker mugged in the A or B gap take away the cutback lane and force the HB into low value bounces. Man coverage on the backside receiver often pulls a defender out of run support, check the corner alignment before the snap to confirm you have a numbers advantage in the box. Cover 3 sky and Cover 4 shells with the safety rotating down late can disguise extra run support, so watch the strong safety depth and trigger timing after the snap. Blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge before the zone blocks set can blow up the play design, if you see edge pressure showing pre-snap consider checking to a different concept in the set.

Usage Tips

Run this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since Wide Zone Wk loses value against stacked fronts and extra run support.

Use the wing tight ends as your pre-snap indicator, if the play side wing gets a good angle on the edge defender you should stick with the bounce read instead of cutting inside.

Pair this with HB Inside Zone and HB Counter Wk in the same set so linebackers cannot sit on one flow direction, the mirrored zone action forces defenders to respect both sides equally.

Use manually on the HB with the cutback lane in mind, patience behind the line lets the zone blocks develop and opens the backside crease against overaggressive linebackers.

Call this on early downs in normal or base personnel looks, it loses effectiveness in obvious passing situations where defenses sub in extra DBs and light boxes designed to stop the pass, not necessarily the run.
