Power O is a downhill gap run out of Singleback Wing Pair with 13 personnel, using a wing tight end and fullback-type lead blocker to kick out the edge defender while the play side guard pulls to lead through the hole. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater, so the primary read progression starts with identifying the play side alignment of the defensive end and the depth of the second level linebackers to decide whether to press the hole or bounce it outside.

Defensive Reads

Check the defensive end alignment pre-snap since a wide 9 technique makes the kick out block tougher and may force an early bounce read. Look for run blitzes from the WILL or MIKE linebacker filling the play side gap immediately after the snap, which can blow up the pulling guard's path. Stacked fronts with a linebacker sitting directly over the wing tight end tend to shut this run down at the point of attack. Spread out fronts or nickel packages with lighter boxes are where Power O hits hardest since there are fewer bodies to climb to at the second level. Watch for safety rotation down into the box pre-snap, which signals a run blitz call and should push you toward a cutback rather than the designed hole.

Usage Tips

Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since the wing personnel gives you an extra gap blocker at the point of attack.

Use pre-snap motion or check the alignment of the SAM linebacker to see if he is stacked over the wing tight end, which tells you whether the kick out block will win clean.

Pair Power O with HB Counter Wk and HB Inside Zone to keep linebackers guessing on gap direction while showing the same backfield action.

On short yardage or 3rd and 1 situations, trust the pulling guard to seal the edge and press the hole hard rather than bouncing it too early.

Combine this play with PA Boot Lt or PA Boot RT off similar formation to punish overaggressive linebacker flow once they start keying the run action.
