Ace Close

Overview

Ace Close is the condensed 12 personnel look inside Singleback, and the alignment is what makes it different from Ace Slot, Ace Big, or the wider Singleback Deuce variants. Both tight ends align tight to the tackles with the receivers narrowed down near the numbers, creating a compressed box with the back set directly behind the quarterback. That squeeze does two things immediately: it forces defenders to declare leverage in a tight window, and it gives you legal motion angles for jet action without ever showing an empty or spread formation tell.

The Gadget tag is earned. Jet Sweep, PA Jet Sweep, and Zone Fake Jet all run off the same motion, so the pre-snap picture is identical whether you are handing it off, faking it and hitting the zone run, or pulling the ball on the play-action. Defenders who user-lock the motion man leave a vacated flat or an overpursuing linebacker, and that is where Close PA Cross and Close Y Seam cash in. Because you are in 12 personnel, the defense usually answers with base or big nickel, which means one of your tight ends is being covered by a linebacker or a third safety rather than a true coverage corner.

That is the matchup you hunt. Close Y Seam isolates the tight end up the hash against zone drops, while Bench and Stick attack leverage on the outside with the compressed splits giving your receivers extra field to work into. The run game is complete on its own: HB Zone Wk, HB Stretch, and HB Toss all get horizontal, and the tight ends at the line give you real down blocks and combo blocks instead of the finesse blocking you get from spread sets. That balance is why Ace Close functions as a full offense rather than a situational package.

Strengths

  • Jet Sweep, PA Jet Sweep, and Zone Fake Jet run off identical motion, so opponents cannot key the pre-snap look and every user-controlled defender who chases the motion man opens a lane behind him.
  • Close Y Seam is a clean zone beater with the tight end running the seam between the hash and the safety, and hot routing the opposite tight end to a drag gives you a high low that punishes Cover 3 and Cover 4 drops.
  • Compressed splits mean Bench and Stick create natural rub and traffic against man coverage, and the outside receivers have the full field width to break into instead of being pinned to the sideline.
  • 12 personnel forces base or big nickel, so you are consistently getting a linebacker or third safety on a tight end, which is the matchup you attack on Close PA Cross and Y Seam.
  • HB Zone Wk, HB Stretch, and HB Toss give you three different horizontal run concepts from the same look, and the tight ends aligned at the line provide legitimate down and combo blocking instead of spread set finesse blocks.

Weaknesses

  • The condensed alignment shrinks your protection surface horizontally, so overload blitzes and nano blitzes off the edge get to the quarterback fast, especially on the deeper play-action drops in Close PA Cross and Close Y Seam.
  • Play-action rollouts and PA Jet Sweep are slow developing, and any unblocked defender kills the concept before the fake finishes, so blitz-heavy opponents make you abandon half the set.
  • Compressed splits let a single user-controlled defender in the middle of the field cover multiple routes at once, since your receivers are already stacked inside the numbers.
  • Only two receivers on the field means limited vertical stretch, and opponents who play deep zone with a user safety in the middle can wall the seam and force you into checkdowns.
  • Jet motion tells experienced opponents the play type range, and once they shade coverage to the motion side, the sweep concepts lose all their edge leverage.

Usage Tips

Read the box pre-snap. If the defense stays in base with two linebackers stacked inside, lean on Jet Sweep and HB Stretch to attack the edge before they widen. If they slide out to big nickel, go back inside with HB Zone Wk.

Establish Jet Sweep early so the motion carries weight, then run Zone Fake Jet and PA Jet Sweep off the same look once your opponent starts user-controlling a defender to chase the motion.

Against single high shells use Close Y Seam and hot route the second tight end on a drag or corner to create a high low read that stresses the middle of the field defender.

On third and medium go to Stick or Bench and check the leverage of the corner. If he is playing outside and off, the stick sits down clean underneath. If he is pressed, hot route to a slant instead.

If your opponent blitzes heavily off the edge, motion the jet man to the pressure side or block the tight end to that side, and audible into HB Toss away from the overload to hit the vacated space.
