Jet Sweep out of Singleback Ace Close (12 personnel) is a pure run play built around pre-snap motion, with the flanker running a jet path across the formation to receive the handoff and attack the edge. The line blocks down and to the play side to seal the interior while the H-back releases out of the backfield to lead block, and the TE stationed inline holds his gap to protect the frontside edge. The primary read is the edge, key the flow of the play side defensive end and any overhang defender to decide whether to bounce it outside or cut it up inside the alley created by the H-back.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the alignment of the play side cornerback and slot defender, if they crash down hard on motion the sweep is dead before it starts. Look for an overhang linebacker or safety cheating outside the tackle box, that alignment signals a scrape exchange or edge blitz designed to blow up the jet path. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end, if he stays home instead of chasing the motion he can string the run out to the sideline for a minimal gain. Zone shells that keep both safeties deep and let linebackers flow hard to the sweep side will shut this down, since there is no cutback support built into the design. User-controlled defenders flying to the edge pre-snap are the biggest threat, if you see a user leave his zone early to chase motion, this is a green light to run it since the alley is exposed.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into flowing early, then snap the ball right as the jet man crosses the formation to maximize speed at the mesh point.
Attack defenses that are stacking the box or showing aggressive run blitz fits, since the outside edge stresses their pursuit angles before they can rally.
Pair this with Zone Fake Jet and PA Jet Sweep from the same set so the defense has to respect the jet motion every snap, opening up boot action and misdirection later in the drive.
Best called on early downs or short yardage near midfield where a home run outside run can flip field position without exposing you to a bad down and distance if it gets blown up.
Watch for slot corners or safeties rotating down into the alley pre-snap, if they widen out early, kill the sweep at the line and check to Stick or HB Zone Wk instead.
