HB Stretch out of Singleback Ace Close (12 personnel) is an outside zone run play designed to get the HB moving laterally before deciding to press the edge or cut it back. The offensive line flows in unison toward the play side, reaching and sealing defenders horizontally to create a running lane rather than blocking straight ahead, while both attached tight ends work the edges to hook or wash down defensive ends. The diagram shows no pass routes, confirming this is a pure zone run with the primary read being the HB's aiming point: press the stretch to the sideline, then read the leverage of the widest defender to decide between bouncing outside, bending it into the alley, or cutting back against the grain.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage pre-snap, if they are lined up wide and squeezed, the cutback lane will be there. Identify safety rotation before the snap, a single high safety often means the defense is selling out to stop the edge, which favors the cutback read. Post-snap, key the backside linebacker's pursuit angle, if he flows hard and fast to the play side, user him or trust the cutback since he cannot recover. This play struggles against gap-heavy fronts and inside blitzes that get penetration before the offensive line can reach block, so avoid calling it into stacked boxes or known run blitz tendencies. Man coverage with an overhang defender crashing down on run support can blow up the edge, so be ready to bend the run back inside rather than forcing it outside.
Usage Tips
Run HB Stretch against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box to maximize your blocking numbers advantage.
Use pre-snap motion or a TE shift to identify if the defense is playing zone or man, since fast flow from linebackers signals zone and gives you a clean cutback lane.
Hot route the backside TE into a stalk or seal block if you see a scraping linebacker crashing hard down the line, this reinforces the cutback side.
Pair HB Stretch with HB Toss and Jet Sweep from the same Ace Close set to keep the defense honest on outside zone flow before hitting them with HB Zone Wk for an inside cutback counterpunch.
Call this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action shots like Close PA Cross later in the drive.
