HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Singleback Ace Close 12 personnel, with both tight ends attached to the formation and no motion pre-snap. The offensive line flows laterally to the weak side while the fullback-less blocking scheme relies on double teams and combo blocks up front to create a cutback lane, and the HB takes a downhill path with a weak side zone landmark before reading his blocks. This is a straight run play with no play-action or RPO element, and the primary read progression is the running back reading the flow of the offensive line from the weak side edge inward to the first natural cutback lane created by the double teams up front.
Defensive Reads
Watch for stacked linebackers showing run blitz pre-snap, since a weak side A gap or B gap blitz can beat this zone scheme before the double teams set up. Identify safety depth before the snap, if the strong safety is crashing down into the box pre-snap that is a sign of an eight man front designed to stop inside zone. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he reads the zone flow quickly and fills his gap without hesitation the cutback lane will disappear. This run struggles against gap-control run defenses and cover 0 blitz packages where extra defenders are stacked in the box with no deep safety help. It beats light boxes and single high shells like cover 3 or cover 1 where the defense is playing pass-first personnel with only six in the box.
Usage Tips
Run this play against base fronts and light boxes where the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box so the double team blocks up front can win their leverage battles cleanly.
Check the defensive line alignment pre-snap and if you see an odd front nose shaded to the play side, consider audibling to HB Stretch instead since the double team combo blocks will get beat.
Use manual control on your fullback or lead blocker if you have one attached to seal the edge defender, then let the HB press the hole before making his cut read.
Pair this with Jet Sweep or PA Jet Sweep from the same set to keep defenses honest on outside contain, since HB Zone Wk hits more inside than those perimeter plays.
Best used on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, when you want to stay ahead of the chains without tipping your hand to an aggressive run blitz look.
