Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Singleback Ace Close with 12 personnel that sells the jet sweep motion before the QB works a vertical shot down the field. The diagram shows the fullback or TE running a deep vertical route up the seam/sideline while the jet motion man cuts across the backfield on the fake, holding the linebackers and safeties on the run fake. This is a shot play built to beat aggressive run defenses and zone coverages that bite on the jet motion, with the primary read being the vertical route off the play-action fake.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, key the safety alignment: two deep safeties who stay home at snap signal a shell built to take away the vertical shot. Watch the cornerback over the vertical route threat, since man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by this concept. Post-snap, track the play side linebacker's first two steps: if he bites hard on the jet motion fake instead of dropping into his zone, the vertical route will sit in the void behind him. User the deep safety and stay disciplined on the run fake to sit in the passing lane, since jumping the jet motion man leaves the seam or vertical route wide open. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers who do not chase the motion man shut this play down completely.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like first and ten when the defense has shown run blitz or heavy box looks against your jet sweep tendency tag in the drive. Watch pre-snap safety depth: if a safety cheats down into the box on jet motion, that is your green light to fire the play-action shot. Hot route the underneath receivers into quick outs or hitches if you see zone defenders sitting deep, since the vertical route may be capped by a single high safety. Sequence this play right after running actual Jet Sweep or PA Jet Sweep from this same set so the defense's run fits and eye discipline get exploited on the fake. Avoid calling this on third and long against zone-heavy defenses, since the play needs run action respect to fully open the vertical window.
