U Off Trips

Overview

U Off Trips is a Singleback set that stacks three receivers to one side while keeping a second tight end attached to the opposite edge, which is what separates it from standard spread looks like Wing Trips or Doubles. You are running 12 personnel out of a trips alignment, so the defense has to decide between matching your heavy package with base personnel (creating a linebacker on a slot receiver) or subbing into nickel and giving up the box count against Motion Power, HB Counter Str, and Inside Zone Split. That decision point pre-snap is the entire value of the set: you get run game leverage or a coverage mismatch, and the defense rarely gets both right.

The trips side gives you natural stacking and rub action, while the offset back and attached tight end create real gap scheme integrity on the backside. Mtn Zone Toss and HB Slam attack the perimeter and interior off the same base look, and the play-action package (PA Boot Slide, PA Dagger U Cross, Mtn PA Y Corner, PA Flood) sells the downhill run action before flooding the field at three levels. Because the tight ends are legitimate route runners in 12 personnel, PA Dagger U Cross gets a big body working across the middle against a linebacker who just took a false step on run action.

The isolation element matters most on the backside. With three receivers bunched to the strong side, your single detached target away from trips gets a clean one on one read, and Slants gives you a quick answer if the defense rotates coverage strength to the trips side. Tagged for 3DRB, Gadget, and Power HB usage, this set lets you keep the same alignment for third down passing, gimmick plays, and short yardage power, which is exactly what you want when you are trying to stay out of predictable personnel tells.

Strengths

  • Personnel conflict is built in: 12 personnel in a trips alignment forces the defense to either leave a linebacker on your slot or go light in the box against Motion Power and HB Counter Str.
  • PA Dagger U Cross is a premium single high beater, with the deep dig sitting behind the hook defender while the U crosser occupies the underneath zone and holds the user defender.
  • Motion Power and Mtn Zone Toss attack the same edge from the same look, so opponents who over-commit to inside gaps get gashed on the perimeter and vice versa.
  • The trips stack creates natural traffic on Slants, and hot routing the point man on a drag or slant out gives you clean rub action against man coverage without needing custom stem work.
  • PA Flood and Mtn PA Y Corner both put three levels on one side, which punishes Cover 3 flat defenders and any coverage where the corner sinks to the deep third.
  • The backside detached receiver gets isolated whenever the defense shifts strength to trips, giving you a reliable one on one for a hot routed fade or comeback.

Weaknesses

  • Only one back in the backfield means A gap and interior overload blitzes get home fast, and the play action package (PA Boot Slide, PA Flood) leaves you with slow developing routes against pressure.
  • The trips alignment is a loud pre-snap tell, so experienced opponents will jump coverage strength, press the stack, and squeeze the short throws before you snap it.
  • Heavy personnel limits your vertical speed. If the defense plays two high and stays disciplined, you are throwing into tight windows with tight ends instead of stretching the top of the coverage.
  • A user-controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field takes away the crossers on PA Dagger U Cross and the seam window on Mtn PA Y Corner, which are the primary reads in the set.
  • Press man across the board disrupts the timing on Slants and the quick game, and without a natural motion release the stacked receivers can get bottled at the line.

Usage Tips

Read the box before you snap. If the defense stays in base personnel against your 12, run Inside Zone Split or Motion Power. If they sub nickel, throw the ball at the linebacker matched on your slot.

Use PA Dagger U Cross on second and medium after you have established the run. The dig route is your primary against single high, and the U crosser is your outlet when the safety squats.

Against Cover 3 or any spot drop shell, PA Flood and Mtn PA Y Corner give you the flat, intermediate, and deep triangle on one side. Take the corner route if the flat defender widens.

Motion the trips side receiver across pre-snap to identify man versus zone. If a defender travels, go to Slants with a hot route rub. If nobody follows, work the flood concepts and the backside iso.

On short yardage and goal line, HB Slam and HB Counter Str out of this alignment keep your Power HB tag productive without ever changing personnel or tipping intent.

Keep a chip or pass block hot route on the back when you dial up the deeper play action calls, since PA Boot Slide and PA Dagger U Cross both need extra time against A gap pressure.
