Defensive Reads
Key the linebacker flow at the snap. If both linebackers step hard toward the initial action, the cutback lane will be wide open. Watch for a Sam or Will linebacker staying home on the backside, since disciplined defenders who do not bite on flow will erase this run. Check safety depth before the snap. Safeties sitting shallow in the box can rotate down fast enough to close the cutback window. User-controlled defenders sitting at the mesh point or lurking in the backfield are the biggest counter to this play, since they can diagnose misdirection immediately. Gap-sound fronts and disciplined 4-3 or 3-4 base defenses that do not overpursue are the best answer, while aggressive blitz-heavy defenses get gashed by the backside cut.

Call this play when linebackers are showing aggressive run fits or flowing hard to the strength of trips formations on tape.
Use it on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to keep defensive coordinators honest against your Inside Zone and HB Slam tendencies.
Watch the Mike linebacker pre-snap. If he is cheating toward the trips side, this misdirection will hit big on the cutback.
Pair this with HB Counter Str and Motion Power in the same set so defenders cannot key on a single flow direction from your run calls.
Avoid calling this into stacked fronts or heavy blitz packages that show gap discipline, since the misdirection loses value if defenders stay home.
