Breakdown

Motion Power is a gap scheme run play out of Singleback U Off Trips with 12 personnel. Pre-snap motion brings a receiver across to adjust the box count and confirm man versus zone before the snap, then the play works a power concept with the backside guard pulling through the hole while the fullback or TE leads through as a lead blocker. The primary read is the play side gap, but the ball carrier should key the pulling lineman and bend the run outside if the edge is sealed. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO, designed to punish light boxes and overaggressive linebacker flow.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker reaction to the pre-snap motion, if they widen or shift with the receiver it signals man coverage and a lighter box for the run. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety usually means the extra defender is in the box and this run may struggle against a stacked front. Look for the play side defensive end or outside linebacker crashing hard down the line, which opens the bounce lane outside the pulling blocker. Beware defenses that show Cover 3 or Cover 1 with an extra hat in the box, since those fronts are built to spill this power concept and force a negative play. If the defense blitzes off the edge before the pull can develop, the runner needs to cut it back inside quickly rather than trying to outrun the leverage.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers into showing man coverage or to force a defensive check, then snap the ball immediately if the defense declares a blitz look. This play thrives on early down and medium to short yardage situations where defenses expect a balanced look out of trips. Pair it with Inside Zone and HB Counter Str in the same set so defenses cannot key on the pulling guard or diagnose gap direction based on formation alone. If the defense stacks the box after the motion, consider hot routing the backside TE into a quick out or checking to Slants to punish the eight man front. Sequence this play after PA Boot Slide or PA Dagger U Cross so linebackers respect the pass action and hesitate on their run fits.
