Breakdown

Mtn PA Y Corner is a play-action shot play out of Singleback U Off Trips with 12 personnel. Pre-snap motion brings a receiver across to adjust the trips look, then at the snap the play fakes an inside handoff before the Y (in-line TE) releases vertically and breaks into a corner route from the core, while the outside trips receiver runs a shallow drag/flat route underneath and the inside slot runs a short out at the sticks. The blocking is play-action pass protection with the offensive line selling run to hold the second level. Primary read is the Y corner route as the shot play, working down to the flat/drag route underneath if the corner is capped.

Defensive Reads

Key the flat defender and outside corner leverage before the snap since this route combo attacks the flat to corner seam typical of Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells. If the defense shows two deep safeties presnap, expect the corner route to be capped and look to the underneath drag or flat route as the actual answer. Watch linebacker depth after the snap, shallow linebackers who bite hard on the run fake open up the deep corner throwing window. Man coverage defenders who trail the motion man across the formation confirm man beater concepts are live, favoring the corner and drag combo. Beware disguised zone blitzes since the play-action protection can be exposed to a fast interior pass rush if the offensive line commits too heavily to the run fake.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.

Best called on second or third and manageable, or as a shot play on first down when the defense expects run action out of 12 personnel.

If the corner route is bracketed by a safety, hot route the drag into a deeper crossing route to attack vacated middle void.

Pair this play with Inside Zone Split or HB Slam earlier in a series so the run action sells the play-action fake and freezes linebackers.

Watch for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells presnap since the deep corner route exploits the seam between the flat defender and the deep outside third or quarter.

Snap the ball quickly against blitz-heavy defenses since the play-action fake naturally slows your protection read.
