Breakdown

Slants from Singleback U Off Trips is a quick-hitting man beater built around three receivers working slant angles from the trips side while the backside X runs a deep comeback along the sideline. The trips receivers all break inward at a shallow depth, creating a natural pick or rub concept that clears space against man coverage and forces defenders to fight through traffic. With the running back staying in to help protect (based on the diagram showing no route or check release from him), the primary read progression starts with the inside slant from the slot, works out to the outside slant, and comes back to the comeback route on the backside if the trips concept is covered.

Defensive Reads

Read the corner over the trips slot receiver pre-snap, if he is playing off with outside leverage the slant window opens up immediately. Watch for a single high safety look, which usually signals man coverage underneath and gives the slants a clean throwing lane. Post-snap, key on the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks into the shallow slant lane he can jump the route and create a turnover opportunity. This play is vulnerable to Cover 3 sky or Cover 2 zone drops where underneath defenders sit on the slant angle instead of chasing receivers in man. User the nickel or slot corner to shadow the inside slant route since that is almost always the first read the quarterback takes.

Usage Tips

Fire this out quickly against man coverage since the slants create natural rubs that are tough for defenders to fight through without a pick call from the defense.

Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment or a single high safety shell before snapping since this concept struggles against sound zone drops that sit underneath.

Hot route the outside trips receiver to a quick out if you see a corner blitz coming from that side, since the slant will get picked off at the mesh point.

Use this on 2nd and short to 2nd and medium situations where the quick timing beats a delayed pass rush and the slants can pick up positive yardage in a hurry.

Pair this with PA Boot Slide or PA Dagger U Cross from the same formation to keep the defense guessing between quick game and shot plays off similar splits.
