Breakdown

Inside Zone Split lines up from Singleback U Off Trips with 12 personnel, showing two isolated receivers to the boundary side and a bunched trio strong that includes the tight ends. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme with double team combos at the point of attack and the HB reading the frontside gap before pressing backside if the initial hole is clogged. This is a pure run play, not a play-action look or RPO, and the primary read progression is playside gap to backside cutback based on how the defensive line and linebackers flow.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the strong safety and see if he is cheating toward the trips side, since a heavy shift there weakens the box count on the backside cutback lane. Check linebacker alignment depth, linebackers playing tight to the line signal an aggressive run blitz package that can be beaten with a quick backside bounce if you get an early cutback read. Post-snap, watch for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard to the playside gap, this often opens the backside cutback since the defender vacates his zone run fit. This play struggles against stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box and disciplined gap control linebackers who stay home instead of flowing with zone action. Look for safety rotation into the box on the snap, if a defense is disguising a run blitz from depth, expect the ball carrier to have less room and consider hitting the cutback lane earlier than usual.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 12 personnel this play still works because of the zone double teams up front.

Watch linebacker depth, if they are sitting shallow and squared up they are reading run fits fast so be ready to press the backside cutback lane immediately.

Use this out of the same Singleback U Off Trips personnel as Inside Zone and HB Slam to keep defenders guessing without changing personnel, forcing them to defend multiple run schemes from identical alignment.

Pair Inside Zone Split with PA Boot Slide or PA Dagger U Cross later in a drive since the run action sets up defenders to bite on similar line movement, opening play-action windows.

Best used on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, since it relies on the defense committing numbers to stop a standard zone run rather than dropping into deep coverage.
