Singleback U Off is a 12 personnel set that stacks both tight ends to one side with the second tight end aligned off the line of scrimmage, creating a wing look rather than the balanced double-tight alignment you get from standard Singleback sets like Ace or Deuce. That off ball tight end is the whole point of the set: he releases clean without worrying about a jam from an alignment defender, and he gives you a legitimate flex threat while the defense still reads the formation as heavy run personnel. The single back is aligned behind the quarterback with one isolated receiver on the backside, which puts a boundary corner on an island every single snap.
The play pool leans run first, with Inside Zone Split, HB Stretch, Wide Zone Wk, HB Dive, and HB Mtn Toss all attacking different landmarks off the same look. Because you can run to the strong side wing surface or bounce it away to the single receiver side, the defense cannot commit a safety without giving something up. The play action package is where the set actually wins: PA Flood, PA Deep Cross, and PA Boot Slide all sell the zone action and then flood a coverage that just took a run step. Corner Strike gives you the shot play off the wing tight end, and Quick Slants gives you the rhythm answer against pressure.
The matchup math here is what separates U Off from spread sets. Defenses match 12 personnel with base or big nickel, which means you are getting a linebacker or a strong safety on your off ball tight end instead of a slot corner. Motion that tight end across the formation and you get a clean man or zone read before the snap, and if it is man, you have a size and route running advantage on a defender who cannot run with him. The isolated backside receiver is the other pressure point: single high shells leave that corner with no help, and Corner Strike or a hot routed fade punishes it.
Run Inside Zone Split and HB Stretch early to establish the run fit, then hit PA Flood or PA Boot Slide off the identical look on second and medium once the linebackers start triggering downhill.
Motion the wing tight end across the formation presnap: if a defender follows step for step it is man, and PA Deep Cross or a hot routed corner on the isolated receiver becomes your best call.
Against single high with the safety shaded to the tight end side, take Corner Strike or hot route the backside receiver to a fade and throw it away from the rotation.
On third and short use HB Dive or HB Mtn Toss instead of a pass, since the defense will bring pressure expecting a throw and the toss outflanks a crashing edge.
Keep the running back in on PA Deep Cross and Corner Strike when you see a heavy box or double A gap look, and check to Quick Slants if the blitz shows and does not bail.
Use Wide Zone Wk to the isolated receiver side when the defense overloads the wing surface, which is the cleanest way to punish a defense that overcommits to the tight ends.
