Scheme Playbook
Madden Offense is the game's baseline generic offensive scheme book, and at 207 plays across 8 formations and 18 sets it is the smallest of the 13 offensive scheme playbooks. That compactness is the point: nothing here is a gimmick package. Singleback carries the largest share at 57 plays (28%) across 4 sets, Shotgun follows at 42 plays (20%) across 3 sets, and the rest of the book pours into heavy two-back football with Near at 30 plays (14%), I Form at 27 plays (13%), Far at 18 plays (9%), and Split Backs at 15 plays (7%). Add 15 Goal Line Offense plays and 3 Hail Mary plays and you have a book that covers every situation in a game without ever asking you to learn a niche set.
The real value is the two-back inventory. Near appears in only 9 playbooks out of 236, Split Backs in only 8, and Far in only 6, so an opponent who has drilled his reads against Shotgun-heavy spread books has almost no repetitions against the backfield looks you can put on the field. Between Near, Far, I Form, and Split Backs this playbook devotes 90 plays (43%) to two-back personnel, which shows up in the 21, 22, and 23 groupings on the depth chart. Plays like 0 1 Trap, Close HB Lead, FB Dive, and 45 Quick Base let you grind clock and keep the front guessing between interior gap runs and lead blocks, while Backs Cross gives you a two-back passing answer out of Split Backs.
Through the air the concept list is deliberately traditional: Post, Go, Out, Corner, Curl, Wheel, Flood, and Sail, tagged with explicit Cover 3 Beater and Cover 2 Beater labels plus Play Action. Flood and Sail concepts off the heavy formations punish single-high rotation after you have shown run, and China Special out of Singleback gives you a layered crossing answer against man. Choose Madden Offense if you want a run-first identity built on rarely-seen backfields, with Singleback and Shotgun (11 and 12 personnel) as the change-up rather than the foundation.
Madden Offense wants a power running roster: two backs worth playing, a fullback with real lead block and impact block ratings, big-bodied run-blocking tight ends for the 22 and 23 groupings, and an interior offensive line that wins at the point of attack on FB Dive and trap calls. The quarterback does not need to be mobile, but he needs play action and short to medium accuracy to cash in the Flood, Sail, Curl, and Corner concepts after the run has set up the shell, and at least one receiver with deep route running for the Post and Go tags. Pick this book if you are a methodical, run-first play caller who wants rarely-defended Near, Far, and Split Backs looks and does not need a wide Shotgun spread menu to feel comfortable.
Search every playbook by tag and personnel grouping, not just Madden Offense.
Build your primary audible package out of Singleback (4 sets, 57 plays) and put Near opposite it. On first and second down between the 20s, alternate interior gap runs like 0 1 Trap out of Near with Singleback play action to keep the safety honest before you show Flood or Sail.
Use Far and Split Backs as your surprise formations, not your base. Call them on second and medium or third and one to three, where the defense has to respect FB Dive and Close HB Lead, then hit Backs Cross out of Split Backs to flood the middle behind the linebacker drops.
Reserve I Form for your clock-killing series with a lead. Two sets and 27 plays is enough to run 45 Quick Base and lead plays in sequence, and the play action tags off those runs punish a safety who is sprinting downhill.
Go to Shotgun on third and seven plus and hot route your outside receivers based on the coverage shell, since 20 percent of the book cannot carry your whole passing game. Lean on the labeled Cover 3 Beater calls against single high and the Cover 2 Beater calls when you read two deep pre-snap.
Keep Goal Line Offense as a true inside the five package only, and make sure your 23 personnel formation subs put your best blocking tight ends and fullback on the field before you get there so you are not burning a timeout adjusting personnel. Goal Post is your one shot answer if the defense stacks the line.
