Overview

Singleback Wing is the 12 personnel gadget hub of the formation. Instead of splitting both tight ends wide or stacking them inline like Doubles or Bunch variants, Wing puts one tight end tight to the line and drops the second into a wing alignment just off the tackle's hip, with a single back behind the quarterback and two receivers outside. That wing body creates an immediate numbers edge to one side without ever motioning, which is why the run block sheet reads like a power playbook: 26 Duo, HB Power O, Counter U, HB Counter WK, HB Toss Crack, and HB Stretch variants all get an extra puller or crack blocker from the wing spot.

The set separates itself from the rest of Singleback through the volume of play action and gadget looks attached to the same run shell. Close PA Sail, Mtn PA PoCo Slide, Mtn PA Copo Slide, PA Verts Y Dig, PA Comebacks Y Dig, PA TE Flood, and Close PA Cross all sell the identical downhill run action, then flip the field with the wing tight end leaking out. End Around Lead, PA End Around, HB Slash Fk End Arnd, and HB Slash Fk End Ard give you legitimate misdirection off the same alignment, which matters against users who commit a defender to the run fit every snap.

Personnel wise, this is where you isolate a receiving tight end against a linebacker or safety. The wing tight end releases free far more often than an inline Y, so TE Stick, TE Stick Fade, TE Attack, and H Zone WK put your best mismatch body on an option or seam route with no press help. Meanwhile the two outside receivers work in space against soft corners on Z Spot, Curl Combo, Steeler Curls, Spacing, WR Drive, and Drive, and the Alert Smoke and Alert Lookie tags on 26 Duo, Zone Split, and HB Stretch let you punch single high looks without leaving the run call.

Strengths

  • Elite run and play action marriage: 26 Duo, HB Power O, and Counter U share identical pre snap looks with Mtn PA PoCo Slide and PA Verts Y Dig, so committed run defenders get punished on the same alignment.
  • The wing tight end is a free releaser against man coverage, making TE Stick, TE Stick Fade, and TE Attack premium man beaters when a linebacker or slot corner draws the assignment.
  • Zone beaters are stacked and layered: Spacing, Curl Combo, Steeler Curls, and Z Spot flood Cover 3 and Cover 4 hook and curl windows without asking you to hold the ball more than three seconds.
  • Built in Alert tags on 26 Duo Alert X Smoke, Zone Split Alert Smoke, Zone Split Alert Lookie, HB Stretch Alert Smoke, and HB Stretch Alert Lookie give you a legal RPO style read off the run call, so a two high shell or a leaning corner turns into free yards.
  • Gadget depth with End Around Lead, PA End Around, and both HB Slash Fk End Arnd variants forces user defenders to stay honest on the backside, which opens up your primary counter and toss game.

Weaknesses

  • Only three route runners on most concepts means a five or six man pressure can bracket the tight end and the primary receiver at the same time, and you have no fourth option to hot route into a bailout.
  • Interior nano blitz and A gap pressure is a real problem on the deeper play action calls: Mtn PA Cross, PA Verts Y Dig, and Close PA Post all take too long to develop if the back is faked out of the protection.
  • Heavy 12 personnel invites base or nickel with two linebackers who can play the run fit and still cover, so a user controlled linebacker sitting in the hook window kills TE Stick and H Zone WK repeatedly.
  • The tendency read is obvious after two or three run calls, and good opponents will crash the wing side with a run blitz, taking away Counter U, HB Power O, and HB Toss Crack before they get started.
  • Slot fade and vertical seam options are limited compared to spread sets, so if the defense plays soft two high you are forced into intermediate throws and grinding drives.

Usage Tips

Establish the run first with 26 Duo and HB Power O on early downs, then run Mtn PA PoCo Slide or Close PA Sail from the exact same look once the user linebacker starts triggering downhill.

Read the single high versus two high shell before every Alert play: on 26 Duo Alert X Smoke or Zone Split Alert Smoke, take the smoke when the corner aligns eight or more yards off with no flat support, otherwise hand it off.

Against man coverage, TE Stick Fade and TE Attack are your go to calls, and hot routing the wing tight end on a drag or slant off PA Y-Drag Wheel gives an easy high percentage completion when you need five yards on third down.

Against Cover 3 or Cover 6, live on Spacing, Curl Combo, and Steeler Curls in the eight to fourteen yard range, then hit PA Comebacks Y Dig once the corners start squatting on the curl.

Save End Around Lead and HB Slash Fk End Arnd for red zone or short yardage situations where the defense is condensing the box, and only after your inside run game has already earned respect.
