The inline TE runs a deep dig that crosses back across the field over the middle while the slot TE runs a shallow drive route underneath it, creating a natural pick and clear against man coverage. The backside X receiver runs a deep corner or go route to hold the safety, the outside receiver on the strong side runs a short flat/out, and the RB releases into the underneath middle area as a checkdown, with the primary read progression going from the deep dig to the shallow crosser and finally to the flat or RB check option.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the deep dig from the inline TE first since that is the primary route defenses must account for against zone drops. If the underneath linebackers widen with the shallow drive route, expect a throwing window to open behind them for the dig. Identify user lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field since they will jump the drive route or the dig if left unblocked, so check the middle of the field before committing to that throw. Diagnose Cover 3 or Cover 1 by checking corner depth and safety rotation, since man coverage without a deep middle safety takes away the picks this play is designed to create and forces you to rely on the natural rub instead. Look for blitz packages sending extra rushers off the edge, since the RB check option becomes critical if protection breaks down before the deeper routes develop.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium to second and long when you expect zone coverage, especially Cover 4 or Cover 2, since the crossing combo is designed to sit defenders down in their zones and create natural picks. Pre-snap, look at the safeties: if they are sitting at 10 to 12 yards with no rotation, that is your Cover 4 or Cover 2 shell and the dig to drive combo will have room to work underneath. Hot route the flat runner into a quick out if you see a corner blitz coming from that side, and consider sliding the RB protection weak if you diagnose an overload blitz pre-snap. Pair this with PA Y-Drag Wheel or Close PA Sail from the same formation so the defense has to respect both the drag concept and the play-action shot off similar alignment. Against man coverage, work the shallow drive route first since the natural rub from the crossing routes creates immediate separation.
