Breakdown

HB Power O out of Singleback Wing 12 personnel is a gap scheme run play built to overload the point of attack with a puller. The play side guard or fullback wraps through the hole to lead block for the HB while the backside guard and tackle down block to seal the interior, creating a strong double team and kickout combo at the point of attack. This is a base run play, not a play-action look or RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the puller: identify whether the kickout defender is sealed or spilled, then press the hole off the puller's block and read the play side linebacker fitting the alley.

Defensive Reads

Look for light boxes with 6 or fewer defenders pre-snap, since this scheme wins easily against those fronts with the extra puller. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker alignment, since a wide 9-technique or crashing edge can blow up the kickout block before the puller arrives. Identify Mike linebacker depth at the snap, since a downhill Mike who reads the pulling guard fast can fill the alley and stop this for minimal gain. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from a safety or Mike linebacker spot are the biggest threat, so this play struggles against aggressive user blitzers who diagnose gap runs quickly. Heavy fronts with an extra defensive lineman or a stacked 4-3 under front can clog the interior gaps and force a negative play if the double team loses ground.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and confirm you have a numbers advantage in the run fit before snapping the ball.

Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest and set up explosive play-action later in the drive.

If the defense shows a heavy box with 8 or more in the box, consider audibling to PA Power O or motioning your TE to check the leverage before committing to the run.

Combine HB Power O with Counter U and Mtn HB Counter in the same series so linebackers cannot sit on the same puller angle every snap.

Trust the puller and press downhill rather than bouncing outside, since this scheme is designed to win between the tackles with double teams and a lead blocker.

Pair this run with PA Power O off the same look to punish linebackers who key run fits too fast and crash the hole.
