HB Power O out of Singleback Wing is a gap scheme run play that pulls the backside guard (and often a fullback or tight end from the wing) to lead through the hole while the play side blocks down, creating a numbers advantage at the point of attack. This is a base run play, not a play-action or RPO, designed to punch downhill through a designated gap using down blocks and a lead blocker rather than zone flow. The primary read for the ball carrier is to press the play side gap, stay patient behind the pulling blocker, and cut off the lead block once the alley opens, with the backside cutback as the secondary read if the defense flows too hard.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the strong side linebacker depth and whether the defense is showing a heavy box, since Power O struggles against gap-sound fronts with extra defenders stacked over the tackles. Look at the safety alignment: a single high shell with the strong safety creeping toward the box signals run support and makes this a tougher conversion, while two high safeties often mean an extra gap defender has to fill from depth. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker to see if they squeeze down on the down blocks or get skinny to string the play out, which determines whether the hole opens inside or the cutback lane is the better path. Watch for a user-controlled defender flowing hard downhill to jump the pulling blocker, since Power O is vulnerable to a well timed A-gap or B-gap blitz that beats the puller to the point of attack. This play beats light boxes and predictable zone fronts that flow away from the play call, but it gets shut down by disciplined 4-3 or 3-4 fronts that hold their gaps and stack the strong side with an extra defender.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage when you want to establish tempo and set up later play-action shots off the same look.

Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or more in the box with no clear overhang weakness, consider audibling to a perimeter run or checking to PA Power O instead.

User the pulling blocker briefly after the snap to help clear the first defender in the hole, then release control to the HB so you can manually pick the cutback lane if the alley is stuffed.

Pair this play in sequence with PA Power O and Close PA Sail from the same set so the defense has to respect both the downhill run action and the play-action boot off identical formation and personnel.

Against aggressive linebackers who crash hard on run keys, mix in HB Counter WK or Counter U from the same set to punish overpursuit with the same blocking picture in reverse.
