Z Spot out of Singleback Wing 12 personnel is a classic Spot concept built to attack Cover 3 zone drops. The backside receiver runs a deep corner route to clear out the top of the zone, the inline TE releases into a quick flat route underneath, and the slot TE runs the spot (settle) route sitting down in the hook zone behind the flat defender. The wing back on the far side runs a dig style crossing route that climbs into the middle void created by the flat and corner combo. Progression reads flat to spot to dig, with the QB working low to high off the flat defender's positioning to find the natural void in the zone.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender post-snap since Z Spot lives and dies on whether he widens with the flat route or sits and jumps the spot route sitting behind him. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, expect a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell that squeezes the corner route throwing lane, so be ready to check to the dig or flat instead. Man coverage with underneath linebackers in tight trail technique can jump the spot route since it settles in place, so identify man alignment pre-snap and consider hot routing the spot to a quick option or slant. A user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow hook zone is the biggest threat to the spot route, so scan for a defender lurking in that area right after the snap before committing to that throw. Cover 3 with a hard closing flat defender or a disguised Tampa 2 look with a deep middle linebacker can take away both the spot and dig reads, forcing the QB down to the flat as the checkdown.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for a Cover 3 shell with a single high safety since this concept is built specifically to punish that look. If you see the corner sitting soft outside, hot route the flat route to a quick out to speed up the timing against man coverage. Use this on second and medium to third and short since the spot route settles quickly and gives a safe underneath answer against zone drops. Pair Z Spot with a play like PA Boot Lt or Close PA Sail in your call sheet so the defense has to respect both the quick spot concept and a deeper play-action shot off similar formation and personnel. Against teams that key on the flat route with a nano blitz or aggressive corner blitz, get the ball out immediately to the flat man since the spot route sitting behind him becomes wide open.
