Sluggo Seam out of Singleback Wing 12 personnel is a man beater built to attack single high safety and press man coverage. The concept pairs a sluggo (slant and go) route from the outside receiver with a seam route from the inline tight end, stretching the deep half vertically while a shorter option underneath holds the linebackers. Primary read progression starts with the sluggo against the corner leverage, then works down to the seam if the safety cheats over the top, with the underneath option as the checkdown against a hard blitz or tight coverage look.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre-snap, that shell tells you the sluggo has a clean vertical lane once the corner commits to the slant fake. Watch the flat defender in Cover 3, if he sinks with the tight end seam release you have a natural throwing lane on an out breaking adjustment. Key the corner's press technique at the line, if he opens his hips early to jump the slant break the go portion of the sluggo will separate immediately. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, that user controlled defender can undercut the seam route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties shut this play down quickly since both vertical routes run into help over the top, so be ready to check down against that look instead of forcing the throw.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap safety alignment before the snap, if you see one deep safety rotate to the sluggo side this play is designed to win over the top. Motion the wing tight end or use a strafe read to bait the corner into jumping the initial slant break so the go route stays open behind him. Best called on second and long or first down shot situations where you want an explosive gain rather than a conservative check down. Hot route the seam runner to a corner route against teams that sit in Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, that adjustment turns a contested seam throw into a clean void shot. Pair this play with HB Slant 18 or Curl Combo earlier in a series so the defense respects the quick underneath game, then come back to Sluggo Seam to hit the sluggo when corners start jumping short routes.
