Defensive Reads

Identify the alignment of the strong side defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap since their leverage determines whether the HB should press or bounce the zone run. Watch for a stacked or heavy box with 7 or more defenders, which signals the defense is selling out to stop the run and this play loses its numbers advantage. Key the linebacker flow at the snap, if they overpursue to the strong side the cutback lane opens immediately behind the zone blocking wall. Look for run blitzes or nano blitz packages that shoot gaps pre-snap, since fast flowing linebackers can blow up the zone track before the double teams set. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is a green light to hammer this play, while defenses in a bear front or heavy zone blitz look can shut down the frontside cut entirely.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a clean numbers advantage. Use the strong tag to shift extra gap protection to the play side against defenses that stack their front toward the tight end alignment. Combine this with Close PA Sail or Close PA Cross out of the same personnel and formation to keep linebackers honest and force them to respect the run action before dropping into coverage. Run this on early downs in normal down and distance situations where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than sub packages. Pair it with HB Counter WK or Counter U as a changeup so defenses cannot key the zone flow and start crashing the frontside gap every snap.
