PA End Around out of Singleback Wing is a play action pass with a built in trick play look, using 12 personnel to sell the run fake before working the route combo downfield. Off the play action mesh, the play sends two vertical breaking routes on the strong side (a corner route from the outside receiver and a deep out breaking route from the inline tight end) while a shallow drag crosses underneath from the backside and a checkdown flat route sits along the line to give the quarterback an outlet. The primary read starts with the corner route on the strong side against man coverage, works down to the deep out if the corner sits, and finishes with the drag or flat route as the checkdown if both safeties rotate over the top, making this a versatile man and zone beater depending on the coverage shell.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment since this concept is built to attack both, but the corner route wins big against single high man coverage. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they crash hard on the run fake, the drag and flat routes will be wide open underneath for an easy checkdown. Track the flat defender or corner reading run action, if he steps up to fill the alley the flat route becomes a house call throw against overaggressive run defense. Zone coverage shells with a deep half safety rolled to the strong side will shut down the corner route, forcing the quarterback down to the deep out or drag. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow drag lane can bait a checkdown throw and jump the route for a turnover, so be ready to reset to the deep out if you see a user lurking underneath.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in run heavy personnel situations so the end around fake actually holds linebackers and safeties before the pass develops.

Check the strong side cornerback pre-snap: if he is playing tight man with no help over the top, take the corner route on a rhythm throw before the play action fake fully clears.

If you see two high safeties post-snap, look to the deep out from the tight end since it settles in the void between the flat defender and the rotating safety.

Hot route the backside drag into a deeper crosser against zone heavy defenses to give yourself a layered read instead of a checkdown only option.
