Post-snap, key the linebackers' first two steps, if they flow hard to the play side gap the cutback lane opens behind the zone blocking. Check the defensive box count before the snap and if you see eight or more defenders stacked near the line, throw the alert route immediately for a big play instead of running into a bad numbers situation.

Use this on early downs when the defense is in base personnel and showing run support safeties, since the vertical alert punishes any single high or cheating safety look.
