Breakdown

Curl Combo out of Singleback Wing with 12 personnel shows a four man route concept designed to attack zone coverage with layered depth. The backside receiver runs a deep vertical to clear space while the slot underneath him runs a corner style route working outside, giving you a high low stretch on that side. On the other side the inline TE at the line runs a quick out and up into the boundary while the flanker on the numbers releases outside then works back to the inside on a curl, sitting down in the intermediate zone. The primary read progression starts with the curl route since it is the built in zone beater against Cover 2 or Cover 3 flat defenders, then moves to the corner route for the high low read against squat corners, with the deep vertical as the field stretcher if the safety bites underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment since press corners on the flanker signal man coverage that opens up a quick out or slant hot route on the curl man. Watch the flat defender on the corner route side, if he sinks with the corner route the underneath curl window opens up for an easy completion. Key the middle linebacker or hook defender, if he widens to the trips or bracket side the vertical route on the backside becomes a viable shot play read. This concept beats Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone shells cleanly because of the curl to corner high low stretch, but it struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 6 where the deep quarter defender can sit on the corner route. Post-snap, respect user controlled zone lurkers sitting in the shallow curl area, since a smart human defender jumping the curl read can bait a turnover if you stare it down too long.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium or third and short to medium since the curl route settles in quickly for an easy conversion throw.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high shell, since the curl and corner combo on the right side is a natural answer to Cover 2 with the corner route sitting behind the corner and in front of the safety.

If you see man coverage with the corner pressed on the flanker, hot route the curl into a speed out or quick slant to beat the leverage instead of sitting into contact.

Pair this play with PA Y-Drag Wheel or Close PA Sail from this same set to keep the defense honest, since both rely on the same personnel and initial receiver releases before breaking off into different concepts.

Against zone blitz looks, get the ball out on time to the curl route since the sit down window closes fast once extra rushers get home.
