Defensive Reads

Cover 1 or Cover 3 shells with man principles underneath are the primary coverages this concept is designed to exploit. Watch the flat defender's initial reaction. If he sinks with the crosser instead of staying home, the flat route becomes the easy answer against zone drops. Identify a user-controlled linebacker spying the middle of the field. A disciplined lurk defender who does not bite on the fake can undercut the deep cross and turn it into a turnover. Diagnose blitz packages pre-snap by checking the box count. A six or seven man box with the fake slide protection called can lead to a free rusher if extra blitzers loop off the edge.

Sell the play fake by holding the LT stick or ball fake button long enough to freeze linebackers before climbing the pocket for your first read.
Use this on early downs like first and ten after establishing HB Dive or 26 Duo from the same Wing formation so the fake slide protection actually influences linebacker aggression.
Key the flat defender pre-snap: if he widens with the strong side TE, the crossing route will have more room to work against man coverage.
Hot route the flat receiver to a quick out if you see a corner blitz off the edge, since the fake slide protection can be vulnerable to overload pressure.
