Defensive Reads

Man coverage with an inside linebacker matched on the slot TE is where the stick concept shines, since the sit route creates natural leverage and separation against man defenders trying to cover from depth. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders through the interior are the biggest threat here since the play relies on a quick, timing-based read and does not have max protection, so recognize pressure early and get the ball out to the flat or shallow crosser. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and a deep third corner can shut down both the stick and flat, so if you see this shell rotate, be ready to take what the shallow crosser gives you underneath instead of forcing the primary read.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety look, since the corner route on the outside receiver will be your shot play answer if you see a single-high shell with the corner rotating down.
Key the stick route first against zone coverage because it settles into the soft spot between the underneath linebackers and the deep zone defenders, giving you a rhythm throw on time.
Against man coverage, work the flat route from the inline TE as your quick release answer since it beats off man leverage and gets the ball out before pressure arrives.
Use this on early downs or third and short to medium since the stick and flat combo gives you a high floor conversion option without needing to test the deep corner route.
Pair this with a play-action shot play like Close PA Sail or PA TE Flood later in a series once the defense starts jumping the stick route, since the run action off similar formations sets up the corner and wheel concepts for explosive gains.
