Breakdown

HB Delay is a designed delayed handoff concept out of Singleback Wing 12 personnel that disguises itself as a dropback pass before releasing the HB through the middle of the formation. The diagram shows both TEs and the outside receivers running vertical clear out routes to pull coverage downfield while the offensive line initially sets up in a pass blocking look before opening a lane for the delayed HB run up the gut. This is fundamentally a run play disguised as a pass, designed to exploit aggressive pass rush teams and defenses that bite on the vertical routes, with the primary read being the HB patiently pressing the mesh point and reading the initial fill from linebackers before choosing his gap.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check for stacked linebackers near the line of scrimmage since disciplined defenses that stay home on the delay action will erase the running lane before it develops. Watch for blitz packages and nano blitzes, this play thrives against overaggressive rushers who crash upfield and lose contain on the delayed HB. Post-snap, identify if any user-controlled linebacker or safety is sitting in a lurk position near the middle of the field since that defender can blow up the play by staying disciplined on the HB. Man coverage shells that send both TEs and outside receivers deep down the field will naturally clear the middle, making this an effective man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 3 man variations. Zone defenses with a spy or a linebacker reading the mesh point tend to shut this down quickly, so avoid calling it against defenses that have shown a spy tendency on previous downs.

Usage Tips

Call this play when the defense has shown blitz-heavy tendencies on early downs since the delayed action freezes overpursuing defensive linemen and linebackers.

Use it on second and short or third and short to catch aggressive fronts crashing hard off the snap.

Watch the pre-snap alignment of the linebackers, if they are stacked tight to the line expecting run, consider audibling to a play-action shot play instead since the delay concept loses value against a defense already sitting on it.

Pair HB Delay with PA Power O and HB Power O in the same drive since all three plays hold similar backfield action but attack different levels, this keeps linebackers guessing between run fits and delayed action.

Sell the pass fake by letting the QB drop normally before the handoff, defenders that key the QB drop and not the HB will bite hard and open the delay lane.
