On the diagram the backside TE runs a deep crosser all the way across the field to the far side hash, the frontside receiver aligned outside runs a corner route up the numbers, and the tight end in the boot path breaks flat to the sideline for the checkdown while the fullback or attached wing motions out to the flat with a shallow drag underneath the quarterback rollout. This is a play-action, man-beater design built to attack overaggressive linebackers who bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression starting on the deep crosser, working down to the corner route, and finishing with the flat/drag route as the quarterback rolls out of the pocket.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a Cover 3 shell with the flat defender sitting outside since that can jump the boot side flat route and undercut the checkdown. Identify if the strong safety or linebacker is spying the quarterback on the rollout, which signals a contain defense designed to shut down the naked boot action. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play hurts defenses most because the deep crosser will pull a defender across the field and create a natural pick versus man technique. Zone blitzes that bring extra rushers from the play side edge can collapse the pocket before the rollout fully develops, so quick game recognition and a fast throw to the flat is the counter. If the defense shows two high safeties and rotates down late, expect the corner route to be taken away, which pushes the progression down to the crosser and flat combo.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium when defenses are keyed on stopping the run out of a two tight end personnel look.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap: a single high safety or stacked box shows man or Cover 1, which makes the deep crosser and corner route much more dangerous.

If linebackers are sitting flat footed at the snap instead of stepping up on the run fake, take the quick flat or drag read immediately since the crosser will take longer to develop.

Pair this play with HB Power O or 26 Duo earlier in a series to sell the run fake harder and get linebackers flowing downhill before you come back with the boot.

Use the rollout to your advantage against pressure by rolling away from the edge blitz side, and if you see the defense bringing extra rushers, get the ball out on the flat route quickly rather than holding for the crosser.
