PA Misdirection Shot is a shot play off play-action from Singleback Wing 12 personnel designed to hit a deep shot while the run fake holds the linebackers. The diagram shows a corner route breaking outside and up the sideline for the vertical shot read, while the other receiver runs a deep out that stems upfield before breaking flat toward the sideline as a secondary window. This is a man beater built to punish safeties and corners who bite on the run fake, with the corner route working as the primary read against off coverage and the out route serving as the checkdown against tighter man leverage.
Watch for a single high safety pre-snap, this indicates man coverage underneath which sets up the corner route as a shot play against a beaten corner. If both safeties are deep in a two high shell, the underneath defenders are more likely to sink into zone drops which can clog the deep out route, so be ready to hold the corner route longer. Track the play-side linebacker depth at the snap, if he steps up hard on the run fake the middle of the field opens for a big shot. User lurk defenders sitting on the corner route will bait a throw, so watching for a defender flashing to the sideline pre-throw signals a jump on that route. Cover 3 with an aggressive edge blitz can disrupt the timing before the deep routes develop, so recognize edge pressure pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out early or check down.
Check the safety depth before the snap, if you see one high or the safeties creeping up on run support this play is live for the corner route shot.
Sell the play-action fake by holding the ball fully through the RB mesh point animation before turning to throw, defenders keying the backfield will bite and open the window deep.
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are more likely to respect the run and play aggressive box fronts.
If the corner jumps the corner route route hard, come off it quickly to the deep out breaking to the sideline since it is often open against man coverage that overplays the vertical.
Pair this with a base run play from the same personnel earlier in a series so the defense commits to run fits, then dial this up on the next snap to burn overaggressive linebackers and safeties.
