PA Misdirection Shot is a shot play out of Singleback Wing 12 personnel that sells a run fake before pushing two vertical stems down the field. The diagram shows a shallow route breaking outside and then flattening into a deep in route across the field, paired with a deep outside route on the opposite side that stems vertically and breaks back toward the sideline. This is a play-action shot designed to hit a big play over the top of an aggressive run defense, making it a zone beater against safeties who bite on the misdirection fake. The primary read progression starts with the deep outside breaking route as the shot read, then works back to the deep in route crossing the field underneath if the shot is covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch for safeties crashing down on the run fake, that hesitation is exactly what this play exploits against single high and Cover 3 shells. Zone coverage with linebackers dropping slow to their landmarks gets beaten by the deep in route settling into the void behind them. Man coverage on the outside receiver running the deep breaking route is vulnerable if the corner bites on the play fake or gets a bad jam, giving the receiver a step on the vertical stem. Cover 2 shells with safeties staying deep and disciplined will limit the shot routes, forcing you to check down to the underneath crosser instead of forcing the deep throw. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field can jump the deep in route if they read the quarterback eyes, so look off that route with a pump or eye manipulation before committing to the throw.

Usage Tips

Call this play on early downs like first or second and short when defenses are keying run to maximize the play-action hesitation from linebackers and safeties. Look at the safety alignment before the snap, single high shells and two deep shells that show run blitz tendencies are prime targets since the misdirection fake will hold defenders for an extra beat. Hot route the underneath route to a quick out or drag if you see man coverage press at the line, giving yourself a quick outlet if the deep shot routes are blanketed. Pair this shot play with HB Misdirection or 26 Duo earlier in a drive so the defense starts respecting the run action, which sets up the play fake here to actually freeze linebackers and safeties. Use PA Boot Lt or PA TE Flood on the following play call to keep defenders guessing between boot action and this deeper shot concept, preventing defenders from sitting on the misdirection key.
