Breakdown

Mtn PA Cross is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing 12 personnel that sells the run fake before working a deep crosser as the primary route. The TE from the wing runs a deep corner/flag route up the numbers while the backside receiver runs a crossing route underneath that travels all the way from one side of the formation to the other, and a shallow drag underneath adds a third layer to the concept as the RB releases into a check release flare off the play fake. This is a man beater at heart, using the deep cross to create natural rub and separation against man coverage, though the layered depth also stresses zone defenders who have to pass off the crosser. The primary read progression starts with the deep corner route, then works down to the crossing route, and finally checks the underneath drag or the RB's outlet route.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong safety and linebacker depth before the snap. If they are sitting shallow and crashing on the run fake, the deep corner route and crosser will both have room to work. If the defense shows two high safeties, expect a hard shell over the top designed to take away the corner route, which means the crosser and drag underneath become the primary answers. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender's drop after the play fake. If he sinks into the crosser's lane instead of biting on the run action, that route will be covered and you need to check down quickly. Beware of Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined underneath defenders, since these shut down the crossing route by squeezing the middle of the field and forcing the quarterback to hold the ball. Man coverage with no help over the top is where this play excels, since the deep cross naturally creates separation against trailing defenders and the play design baits linebackers into biting on the run fake.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or shifts to identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap, since the crosser's effectiveness depends heavily on coverage type.

If you see single high safety alignment, trust the deep corner route on the TE since it will often have a one on one matchup against a linebacker or safety in coverage.

Hot route the underneath drag into a spot or hook route against zone heavy defenses to give yourself an easier completion window if the crosser gets picked up by a linebacker sitting in a zone drop.

Pair this play with Mtn PA Boot or Mtn PA Fk Slide earlier in a drive so the defense respects the same backfield action, then hit them with the deep cross once they start jumping the underneath routes.

Best used on second and medium or third and long situations where the defense is more likely to play zone shells or two high safety looks, since the crossing route stretches those zones horizontally and creates explosive play opportunities.
