Breakdown

PA TE Flood is a play-action pass out of the Singleback Wing formation that uses a three level flood concept to the closed (strong) side of the field. Off the play fake, one receiver runs a deep vertical clear out, the inline tight end works to the flat, and the flexed tight end runs an intermediate crossing route from the backside that settles underneath the flood. To the backside, the remaining receiver runs a shallow drag across the formation, giving the quarterback a check down away from the flood if the strong side is jumped. This is a classic Cover 3 beater since the flood concept overloads one deflender in the deep third with three vertically stacked options, and the primary read progression starts at the deep vertical clear out route, works down to the intermediate crosser, and finishes at the flat route underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the free safety depth and count defenders to the strong side. A single high safety with only two defenders to the flood side is the green light to attack. Post-snap, key the flat defender first. If he sinks or widens too far with the flat route, the window for the intermediate crosser opens up immediately behind him. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in a deep third lurk. A rangy user safety who reads the quarterback's eyes to the flood side can jump the intermediate route and turn it into a turnover. Identify Cover 3 zone drops from the linebackers. If the play side linebacker widens with the tight end flat route without accounting for the crosser, the middle throw is wide open. Cover 2 with hard corners and no deep middle safety can shut this play down since the flood routes run into two deep defenders instead of one, so check for two safeties before committing to the strong side read.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the safety alignment to confirm a one high shell before snapping since this play is built to punish Cover 3 and Cover 1 defenders who cannot cover all three flood levels.

If the corner to the flood side is playing off man, hot route the flat route tight end to a quick out or speed out to give the quarterback an instant answer against man coverage.

Take this shot against defenses that are selling hard on run action from Singleback Wing personnel, since linebackers biting on the play fake open up huge throwing lanes for the intermediate crosser.

Pair this play in a call sheet with Close PA Sail and PA Boot Lt so the defense sees similar tight end heavy run action but has to respect a different flood direction each time.

Best used on early downs or in play action heavy sequences after establishing HB Power O or 26 Duo, since defenses that respect the run get frozen just long enough for the flood routes to develop.
