Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety looks pre-snap, this play is designed to exploit Cover 3 and Cover 1 since the wheel route can beat both man and zone if the corner bites on run action. Post-snap, track any user-controlled linebacker or safety dropping into a lurk position over the drag route, that defender can undercut the throw if the quarterback stares it down too long. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties, the wheel route is less effective since the deep half or quarter defender can close on it, so prioritize the drag and flat instead. If the defense shows an aggressive edge blitz, the flat route becomes a quick answer, but be ready for a linebacker spy or delayed blitzer disrupting the drag route timing.

Use this play on early downs when you have already established the run game from Singleback Wing to sell the play-action fake convincingly.

Key the flat defender and the strong safety before the snap, if you see man coverage on the TE running the wheel, throw it early before the corner can undercut the route.

Against zone coverage, work the progression from wheel to drag since the drag route tends to sit in the soft spot between the linebacker level and deep zone defenders.
