Breakdown

Spacing out of Singleback Wing (12 personnel) spreads horizontal stretch routes across the formation to attack zone drops. The outside receiver runs a quick out breaking to the sideline, the slot TE/WR runs a corner-ish pivot back to the flat area, and the wing TE releases vertically before settling into a hitch. The backside X runs a vertical stem that breaks outside toward the sideline, giving you a full horizontal stretch from the numbers to the boundary. This is a classic Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater built to sit zone defenders down and create easy completions underneath, and the primary read progression goes from the flat route to the underneath hitch to the outside breaking route based on where the flat defender widens.

Defensive Reads

Diagnose Cover 3 by looking at the single high safety pre-snap and the corners playing outside leverage, which invites the flat and hitch routes to open up. Watch for a linebacker spy or hook defender sitting in the shallow zone since that lurk threat can jump the underneath hitch route if you stare it down. Check flat defender depth immediately after the snap. If the flat defender widens with the flat route, the hitch behind him becomes wide open. Against Cover 4, read the outside cornerback's transition. If he sinks into a deep quarter instead of squatting on the out route, throw the sideline breaking route with anticipation. Man coverage or a nano blitz off the edge kills this play design since Spacing relies on horizontal zone voids, so audible to a hot route or check to a quick slant if you see press corners and blitzing linebackers walked up pre-snap.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and short or third and short when defenses sit back in zone shells to protect against explosive plays.

Pre-snap, identify if the corners are playing off with soft zone leverage since that tips Cover 3 or Cover 4 and confirms Spacing will have soft grass underneath.

Hot route the backside vertical route into a quick slant if you see press man coverage to give yourself a rhythm throw versus man beaters.

Pair this play with PA Verts Y Dig or Sluggo Seam in your play-calling sequence so defenses cannot sit on the short zone stretch all game.

Work your progression fast: check the flat defender first, then work back to the hitch sitting in the zone window, and only go to the deep out last since it takes longer to develop.
