Close PA Post runs from Singleback Wing 12 personnel and opens with a play-action fake to sell run action before the QB works the pass concept. Off the fake, the TE from the wing releases and breaks into a deep post crossing the middle of the field, while a second underneath route runs a flat-to-out breaking pattern to the left as a checkdown or zone beater against sinking linebackers. Defensive Reads

Watch for a single high safety rotating late, this tips zone coverage and means the post route will have a defender waiting in the deep middle. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap and they stay split at the snap, this is a zone shell that favors sitting the underneath out route instead of forcing the post. Key the play-side linebacker depth, if he sits shallow and reads run first, the post route window opens up behind him quickly. Watch for a user lurking underneath in the middle of the field, this is the biggest threat to the post route and can bait a turnover if the QB stares it down. A hard edge blitz off the play-action look should be picked up by the extra TE or backfield protection, if that blitz gets home unblocked, abandon the deep read and get the ball out to the flat route immediately.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs like 1st or 2nd and short to mid distance so the run fake actually holds linebackers and the safety for a beat.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see a single high safety or two safeties cheating toward the boundary, the post has room to work behind them.

If the corner playing the outside route is jumping routes in man coverage, hot route the underneath out to a quick option or speed up the drag to give yourself a faster outlet.

Pair this with HB Dive or HB Blunt Dive earlier in a drive so the play-action fake carries more weight against aggressive run fits and linebacker blitzes.

Combine this with Close PA Cross or PA TE Flood in your call sheet to keep defenses guessing between crossing routes and vertical shots off the same run action look.
