HB Mid Zone is a zone run play out of Singleback Wing with 12 personnel, giving you extra blocking support from the two tight ends on the wing. The offensive line flows laterally with zone steps, reading the defensive front to cut the ball to whichever gap the linebackers and defensive line vacate. The primary read progression starts with the playside double team and the first key defender (usually a 3 tech or 4i), then works to the backside linebacker flow before the running back decides whether to press the crease, bend it backside, or bounce it outside.
Watch for stacked boxes with eight or more defenders near the line, since this kills the cutback windows the zone scheme relies on. Identify Mike linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow and flowing fast to the play side, expect a user spy or lurk defender crashing the frontside gap. Look for defensive tackles slanting hard to one gap, this often opens a backside cutback lane for the running back to exploit. Beware of nano blitzes from the edge or overload fronts, since the zone blocking scheme is slower to react to fast interior pressure. Against man heavy fronts with single high safety, the extra hat from the second tight end usually wins the numbers battle at the point of attack.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
Use the extra TE on the wing to identify the strong side and let your back read the frontside double team before committing to a lane.
Attack base 4-3 and 4-2-5 fronts where the interior defensive line is not gap sound, since zone steps create natural cutback lanes against penetration.
Pair this with PA Power O and HB Power O out of the same personnel to keep linebackers honest on downhill flow before hitting them with counters.
Use HB Mid Zone on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to stay ahead of the chains and set up play action shots like Close PA Sail or PA Boot Lt later in the series.
