RZ Mtn PA Crossers is a play-action crossing concept built for the red zone out of Singleback Wing 12 personnel. Off the play fake, both attached receivers run deep crossing routes that sit at the same depth, one from the left breaking right and one from the right breaking left, creating a natural rub through the middle of the field. The right-side receiver stems vertically before cutting flat across the field low, while the left-side receiver angles up into a deeper crosser, giving you a two-level crossing look designed to confuse man coverage defenders and pull zone linebackers out of their drops. The primary read starts with the shallow crosser working from right to left underneath, then progresses to the deeper crosser working left to right if the shallow guy is taken away.
Key the linebacker depth at the snap since PA Mtn Crossers wants those defenders to bite on the run fake before the crossers develop. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field, commonly called the lurk, because he can jump the shallow crosser if he reads it early. Man coverage with tight press corners is where this play wins most often due to the natural rub the two crossers create as they exchange depth. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined linebackers who stay in their hook zones can shut this down since both crossers run directly into occupied zone windows. Check the strong safety alignment before the snap, if he is stacked over the crossers depth at the snap the deep crosser read becomes risky and you should stick with the shallow option.
Use this near the goal line or inside the 10 where the shortened field width makes the crossing rub especially deadly against man coverage. Check for man coverage indicators presnap like tight corner alignment and safety rotation toward the strength, since the natural pick created by the two crossers is a true man beater. If you see a single high safety or Cover 1 look, lean on the shallow crosser as your first read since it clears space underneath quickly. Against zone shells with linebackers sitting in short hooks, hot route the shallow crosser to sit down in the void behind the linebackers instead of running through traffic. Pair this play with Mtn PA Cross or Close PA Cross earlier in a series so the defense has already seen the play fake and crossing action, then hit them with the two level crosser variant here to attack overcommitted linebackers.
