Mtn H Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Singleback Wing 12 personnel that uses pre-snap motion to shift the H-back across the formation before the snap. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing laterally to the play side with the fullback/H-back kicking out to seal the edge while the running back takes an inside zone path, reading the double team blocks up front. This is a zone run play, not a pass concept, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback lane first, then bounce to the play side if the defensive line flows too hard.
Watch linebacker reaction to the H-back motion pre-snap, since linebackers who shift or run with the motion man are likely in man coverage or a rotating front that overcommits to the play side. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, since if they crash hard down inside the cutback lane opens for the running back. User a linebacker or safety to spy the backside cutback lane, since this is the primary counter to slow flowing defenses that get gashed by inside zone. Stack the box with an extra defender against 12 personnel and play downhill run fits to shut down the inside zone before the H-back can seal the edge. Watch for the fullback or H-back kick out block release, since aggressive edge defenders who get sealed create the natural bounce lane the runner will take on the second read.
Use the H-back motion to identify if the defense is running with the motion man, which tips man coverage or a base front adjustment before the snap.
Run this out of 12 personnel on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are in base fronts rather than nickel or dime packages.
If the defense shows a heavy box with eight or more defenders after the motion settles, consider audibling to a play-action shot play like Mtn PA PoCo Slide since defenses overplaying the run open up explosive shots.
Pair this play with Mtn HB Counter and Mtn HB Dive in the same personnel grouping to keep the defense guessing between zone and gap schemes without changing personnel and tipping your hand.
Attack the backside cutback lane hard against fast flowing linebackers who bite on the zone stretch, since the H motion often pulls linebackers out of position.
