Breakdown

Mtn PA Copo Slide is a play-action man beater out of Singleback Wing 12 personnel that uses pre-snap motion to identify man coverage before the ball is snapped. The concept features a corner post route working to attack the deep middle and outside leverage defenders, paired with a slide protection scheme up front that gives the quarterback a clean pocket to climb into off the play fake. The primary read starts with the corner post against off man or single high safety looks, and if that window is late to develop, the quarterback works down to the slide protection release and underneath backside options.

Defensive Reads

Check the free safety depth pre-snap, a single high safety shaded to the field side signals man coverage underneath which opens the corner post window immediately after the play fake. Watch the motion defender at the snap, if a linebacker or defensive back travels with the motion man you have man coverage confirmed and should trust the primary read without hesitation. Identify press corners pre-snap on the post side, aggressive jam technique with no deep safety help is the ideal matchup for this concept and should be your first look. This play struggles against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with a deep third or deep quarter defender sitting on the post route, so check the corner and safety leverage before committing to the throw. Post-snap, respect the user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, a smart user will rob the post route so have your check down or slide protection release ready as a bailout option.

Usage Tips

Send the pre-snap motion across the formation and watch how the defense reacts, if a defender runs with the motion man across the formation you have confirmed man coverage and the corner post becomes a high value shot play.

Use this on early downs in your play-action sequence after you have established the run game with 26 Duo or HB Power O out of the same Wing formation, defenders respect the run fake more when they have seen the tendency on tape.

Hot route the corner post to a fade against press man corners with no safety help over the top, this turns a good man beater into an explosive shot play versus aggressive corner tables.

Pair this call with Mtn PA Boot and Mtn PA Cross from the same set to keep the defense guessing on which direction the play-action bootleg or dropback will attack, the shared formation look disguises your intentions.

Best used on first or second and medium when the defense is not in an obvious passing situation, this keeps the slide protection call honest against blitz heavy fronts that sell out on obvious passing downs.
