HB Dive out of Singleback Wing 12 personnel is a pure downhill run play, not a man or zone beater since there is no route concept to read, just the offensive line and TEs blocking straight ahead while the HB takes the handoff and hits the A or B gap immediately. The diagram shows no receivers running routes off the two outside vertical stems (those are just alignment markers for the wing TE and split end), confirming this is a north-south power run designed to get the HB through the interior line fast. Primary read progression is simple: the HB reads the initial gap created by the center and guards, then bounces to the backside cutback lane if the frontside gap is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 look with linebackers stacked tight to the line, since heavy box counts signal they expect the run and will fill gaps fast. Watch safety depth: if both safeties are shaded deep in a two high shell, the box is lighter and this dive has more room to break through the second level. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's first step, if he flows hard to the play side gap immediately it usually means the defense called a run blitz or gap exchange, so be ready for the HB to cut back. This play struggles against goal line or heavy run stuff fronts with extra defensive linemen crashing every gap, and it can get blown up by a well timed A gap blitz from a nano package. It thrives against nickel or dime sub packages where the defense has substituted out linebackers for coverage defenders, leaving fewer bodies to fill run fits.
Usage Tips
Use HB Dive on early downs like first and ten or short yardage situations where you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect the interior run before opening up your play-action shots. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run or PA play like Close PA Sail instead. Pair HB Dive with 26 Duo and HB Power O in the same personnel package so the defense cannot key run direction based on formation tendencies alone. Hot route the wing TE to a quick chip block if you are facing an aggressive edge blitzer, since the extra half second can be the difference between a stuffed run and a five yard gain. Sequence this play early in a drive to bait linebackers into crashing downhill, then hit them with HB Slash Fk End Arnd or PA Middle later to punish overpursuit.
