Breakdown

45 Quick Base is a dive run out of Shotgun Doubles that hands the ball to the HB straight through the middle of the formation. The diagram shows the interior line blocking straight ahead at the point of attack while the HB takes a direct downhill path off the mesh point, with the two outside receivers running vertical stems to hold the corners and safeties deep. This is a run play designed to hit a fast-developing gap before the defense can flow, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the initial dive lane first, then bounce off the play side guard or center if a defender fills inside.

Defensive Reads

Check the linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow and crowding the line this run will get cut off quickly. Look at the defensive tackle alignment, a heads up nose or 3 technique clogging the play side gap forces the HB to cut back immediately. Watch for a user controlled defender flowing down hard from the second level, since that is the biggest threat to blow up this play behind the line. Man coverage on the outside receivers does not matter much here since this is a designed run, but if the defense shows blitz with extra rushers crashing the box, you need to get the ball out fast before the gap collapses. Zone drops from the outside corners and safeties are irrelevant to stopping this play, so focus purely on interior gap discipline and linebacker fill speed.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs, especially first and second and short, when you want to keep the offense on schedule without exposing the QB to pressure. Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm the defense has six or fewer in the box, since this dive struggles against stacked fronts. If you see two safeties rolled deep with a light box, hit the A gap immediately rather than trying to force a bounce outside. Pair 45 Quick Base with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from this same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick perimeter throw off similar formation and personnel. Mix in HB Mid Draw and Inside Zone from the playbook to keep linebackers guessing on run direction and prevent them from keying the dive too fast.
