0 1 Trap out of Shotgun Doubles is a power run play built around a trap block scheme, pulling an interior lineman across the formation to kick out a defensive tackle or crashing end while the running back presses the hole and cuts off the trap block. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and it is designed to exploit aggressive interior penetration and undisciplined gap integrity from the defensive line. The primary read for the ball carrier is the trap block itself: press the mesh point, read the puller kick out the first threat inside, then decide between the trap lane or bouncing outside if the second level linebackers scrape too hard.
Pre-snap, identify defensive tackle alignment: a shaded three technique or wide DT crashing hard upfield is the ideal trap target. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the Mike and Will linebackers are stacked too far downhill they will get sealed by the second level blockers on the trap. Post-snap, key the defensive end's crash angle, if he stays home or squeezes down the play loses its natural cutback lane. User controlled defenders sitting in the A or B gap can jump the trap block, so be ready to bounce the run outside if you see a user fly in early. Two gapping fronts and disciplined read and react linebackers are the biggest counter to this play since they neutralize the trap block and fill downhill without overcommitting. Heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders through the exact trap gap can blow this play up before the puller gets across, so respect all out interior blitz tendencies on early downs.
Call 0 1 Trap when the defense is showing a stacked 4-3 or over front with penetrating three techniques since fast upfield DTs are the easiest to trap block.
Check pre-snap for wide 9 techniques or slanting defensive lines because the trap concept punishes over aggressive gap shooters who do not read run keys.
Use your hot route to keep the fullback or H-back in as an extra blocker if you see a blitz alert from the Mike linebacker pre-snap.
Pair this with 45 Quick Base or RPO Peek Slant on the following snap to keep linebackers honest after they start flowing hard to stop the trap.
Best used on early downs, first and ten or second and short, to stay ahead of the chains and set up play action shots like PA Dagger or PA Read Boot later in the drive.
Avoid calling this into a heavy zone blitz look since a scraping linebacker or looper can blow up the trap lane before the puller arrives.
