Inside Zone from Shotgun Doubles 11 personnel is a straightforward zone run play with the HB aligned next to the QB and no play-action or pass tags attached. The diagram shows the offensive line executing zone steps with double-team combo blocks at the point of attack, sliding down the line to seal running lanes based on the defensive front. Your primary read starts with the frontside double team and the first key defender in the box: if he gets sealed inside, hit the crease off the double team, if he penetrates, work the cutback lane behind the zone flow.
Watch for a stacked box with eight or more defenders inside the tackles, since Inside Zone loses efficiency against heavy run fronts. Key the frontside linebacker depth: if he is sitting shallow and reading run fits fast, expect a quick fill and consider cutting back immediately. User-controlled defensive tackles who shoot gaps rather than reading blocks can blow up zone steps, so be ready to bounce outside if you see a user flash into the backfield. Cover 1 and Cover 3 looks with an extra run defender in the box (robber or spy) are the toughest shells to run into, since they add a defender without sacrificing coverage integrity. Nickel and dime packages with light boxes are where this run hits hardest, since there are fewer bodies to account for at the second level.
Check the box count before the snap and confirm you have a numbers advantage against the front seven before calling this run.
Use your fullback or lead blocker read if available to identify which gap the line is sliding toward, then commit to one cut instead of dancing.
This play punishes light boxes out of Doubles, so if the defense shows two high safeties and a nickel sub package, call Inside Zone to run at the sub defender.
Pair this with RPO Zone Peek and RPO Read FL Screen out of the same formation and personnel so the defense cannot sit on run keys without giving up easy throws.
Best used on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when defenses are more likely to play base fronts instead of stacking the box.
