Breakdown

94 Y is a play-action flood concept out of Shotgun Doubles designed to attack Cover 3 and other zone shells. The play-side (right) has a three-level flood with the Y running a vertical seam/go, the outside receiver running an out breaking to the sideline, and the HB releasing into a swing route out of the backfield for a checkdown flat option. On the backside, the X runs an out to the numbers while the slot receiver clears vertically up the sideline, giving the quarterback a two-man flood if the defense rotates away from the play-action fake. The primary read starts with the deep seam from the Y, works down to the intermediate out, and settles on the HB swing as the checkdown against a hard zone drop.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender immediately after the snap. If he widens with the HB swing, the out route behind him is open for a big gain. Key the strong safety depth pre-snap. If he is shaded to the flood side and sitting at 10 to 12 yards, the deep seam from the Y will be contested and the quarterback should work the shorter out instead. Identify user-controlled defenders dropping into a lurk position over the middle. If a user linebacker or safety sits in the passing lane of the intermediate out, look to hit the HB swing quickly before he can close. Man coverage with no safety help over the Y is the biggest exploit here, the vertical seam wins immediately. Cover 2 shells with a hard corner squeezing the out and a safety capping the seam shut this play down, expect the quarterback to check down to the HB swing in that look.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs after establishing the run game so the play-action fake actually holds linebackers and freezes the flat defender.

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety look. Against single-high (likely Cover 3), the flood side out and seam combo has room to work.

If the defender over the Y is playing tight man with no safety help over the top, hot route the seam into a go route to take the top off the coverage.

Pair this play in a sequence with Curl Flats or Deep In from the same set so the pre-snap look stays consistent and forces linebackers to respect play-action every snap.

Best called on first or second down in the 6 to 10 yard range where defenses are more willing to sell out on the run fake.
