Mid Zone is the base inside zone run out of Shotgun Doubles 11 personnel, designed to hit between the tackles with the HB reading blocks off the double team at the point of attack. The offensive line zone steps in unison, sealing one gap over so the running back can press the mesh point and cut into whichever crease opens up, whether that is a bang, bend, or bounce read. This is a true run play with no play-action or RPO tag attached, so the primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback first, then playside bend if the frontside double team gets movement.

Defensive Reads

Identify the defensive front pre-snap. Odd fronts with a true nose over center make the frontside double team harder to execute cleanly, so expect a tighter, more one cut window. Check safety alignment for run support. A single high safety cheating down into the box signals run blitz or crash tendencies, which favors a cutback read behind the backside zone step. Watch for user controlled defensive linemen crashing hard playside off the snap, since that is the biggest threat to blowing up the mid zone timing and forcing an immediate cutback decision. Key linebacker gap fits after the snap. If linebackers flow too fast to the play call side, the backside cutback lane opens up for a big gain. This run struggles against heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders through the A and B gaps pre-snap, so if you see a stacked box with blitz indicators, consider checking to a quick pass instead of running into a losing numbers battle.

Usage Tips

Run this out of a run-heavy personnel look early in a series to establish tendency before pairing it with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Peek Slant later, since defenders that key run flow will bite on the play-action and RPO fakes off this same zone footwork.

Use this on early downs, first and second and short to medium, where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of nickel or dime sub packages that clog run lanes.

Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box with no light box, consider audibling to a pass concept like Curl Flats or Mesh instead of forcing the run into a stacked front.

Watch linebacker depth at the snap. Downhill linebackers who fill gaps aggressively can be set up for a cutback if you sell the frontside flow hard with your user controlled blocks or lead blocker angle.

Pair this with HB Counter and Inside Zone in the same set to keep the defensive line guessing between zone steps and gap schemes, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their fits.
