Salem Z-Fade is a quick-hitting man beater built around isolating the Z receiver on a fade route against single coverage. The Y and X run intermediate routes to hold linebackers and safeties, clearing the boundary for a one-on-one shot down the sideline. This is not a play-action or RPO concept, it is a straight dropback pass with the primary read being the Z fade on the outside, progressing to the underneath crossers if the corner has outside leverage or safety help rotates over.

Defensive Reads

Check the corner over the Z receiver pre-snap, tight press alignment with no deep safety rotation is a green light to fire the fade immediately at the top of the drop. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with a deep safety sitting over the numbers will take away the fade window. Watch for user controlled corners baiting a jump on the route, if the defender opens his hips early and sinks, look to the underneath crossing routes instead of forcing the deep ball. Key the linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into passing lanes it signals zone coverage and the fade should be your last read behind the shorter option routes. Beware disguised Cover 2 looks where the corner sits low and the safety rotates late, this combination takes away both the fade and the underneath window if you hesitate on the throw.

Usage Tips

Use this play when you spot a cornerback in press or man alignment with no safety help over the top, especially against Cover 0 or Cover 1 shells.

Throw a back shoulder ball on the Z fade if the corner is running with your receiver stride for stride, this prevents the pick six risk from a user swatting the ball.

Pair this play with Curl Flats or Spot N Go earlier in a drive so the defense respects the shorter timing routes before you hit them with the deep shot off the same formation look.

Hot route the underneath receiver to a quick out or slant if you diagnose zone coverage pre-snap, since the fade loses value against a soft cushion or two high safety look.

Best used on second and long or first down shot plays when you have play calling equity to eat a potential incompletion, avoid calling this on third and short.
