617 out of Shotgun Doubles is a five man route concept built with a slant flat combo to the boundary and a drag, corner strike, and go route to the field side. The backside X runs a slant while the TE releases into the flat underneath it for a quick two level stretch on that side. To the field, the slot runs a drag underneath, the outside receiver runs a go up the sideline, and the flat man works from the backfield area out into a corner style route, giving the QB a high low flat to deep read on the trips side. Primary progression starts with the slant flat to the boundary as a pre snap alert versus soft coverage, then works to the drag in the middle of the field before checking the corner strike and go for a big play shot.

Defensive Reads

Identify the corner depth on the boundary pre snap, since a tight press corner can jump the slant and force the QB to the flat option immediately. Watch the strong side safety rotation after the snap, because if he rotates down to help on the drag it opens the go route and corner strike behind him. Key the middle linebacker drop on the drag route, this play is most vulnerable to a robber or lurk defender sitting in that exact throwing lane in Cover 3 or Tampa 2 shells. Recognize Cover 2 shells pre snap by corner depth and safety width, since the flat and drag combo can be squeezed by a sinking cornerback and an underneath linebacker working in tandem. Watch for user blitzers off the edge crashing the flat side protection, this forces a rushed slant read and can bait an interception if the defense sits the shallow zone.

Usage Tips

Use the slant flat as your first read against off man or soft zone corners since it is the quickest throw on the play and punishes cushion coverage immediately.

Check the middle of the field pre snap because the drag route on the field side is a great answer versus single high shells like Cover 1 and Cover 3 where the flowing linebackers create a natural window.

Hot route the flat defender or TE into a shorter option if you see a hard blitz look, since the play only has five receivers out and needs quick protection help versus overload pressure.

Pair 617 with Curl Flats or Curls Slot Shake in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the intermediate curl reads out of similar formations.

Save the go route and corner strike combo for third and long or two minute situations when defenses are more likely to sit in zone and give up the deep shot off the drag action.
