Breakdown

Z Spot from Shotgun Doubles is a classic Spot concept built to attack Cover 3 and other zone shells. The X receiver runs a corner route to clear the deep third, the slot runs a quick out/flat that settles at the sideline, the TE runs a spot route sitting at the hash, and the Z (backside) works a shallow drag under across the field while the HB releases into a check release flat route underneath. Read it from outside in: corner clears the top, spot sits underneath in the hole left by the flat defender, and the shallow drag is your answer versus man coverage or if the underneath defenders squat on the spot.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth: two deep safeties usually signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which invites you to work the spot and flat routes instead of forcing the corner. Watch the flat defender post-snap since his drop or blitz determines whether the spot route or the check release flat route from the HB is the first open target. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a single high safety, target the void behind the underneath flat defender with the spot route before the safety can rotate over. Man coverage with no safety help over the top means the shallow drag is your best answer since it creates natural separation against trailing defenders. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow drag lane, since a smart user defender can undercut that route and jump the throw if you stare it down too long.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the X is playing off or press since that determines whether the corner route or the underneath spot route will be open first.

Against Cover 3, throw the spot route as soon as the underneath zone defender flows toward the flat, since that opens the window right behind him.

Use the shallow drag as your check down versus man coverage or when the defense drops extra bodies into the deep zones, since it settles in space and lets you pick up easy yards.

Pair this with 45 Quick Base or Curl Flats out of the same formation to keep the defense guessing between quick underneath throws and this three level zone beater.

Best used on second and medium or third and short since the spot route sits at a reliable depth for the sticks and the corner route punishes any low safety cheating up.
