Breakdown

Texans Dig out of Shotgun Doubles sends the backside outside receiver on a deep vertical clearout up the sideline while the backside slot runs a quick out breaking away from traffic. On the frontside, the inside receiver runs the namesake dig, working across the middle on a hard in cut, with the outside receiver on that side running a corner route to hold the safety and cornerback deep. The blue route out of the backfield is a check release release into a short flat/option route, giving the quarterback a built in outlet if the dig is covered underneath. This is a man beater concept designed to attack linebackers and nickel defenders who cannot stay on top of the dig, with the primary read progressing from the dig to the backside out and finally to the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Watch for the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he is shallow and reading the quarterback's eyes he can undercut the dig before it crosses the field. Identify single high safety shells, this leaves the dig one on one against a linebacker or slot corner which is the ideal matchup for this concept. If the defense shows two deep safeties with press corners, expect the backside corner route and outside vertical to be doubled, forcing an early checkdown read. Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the intermediate middle zone as a lurk threat, this is the biggest disruptor of the dig route and should bait the throw to the backside out or flat instead. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge often leave the dig wide open since coverage rotates late, so a clean pre snap protection check is critical before committing to the deep read.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium to third and long situations where the middle of the field is likely to open up against man coverage.

Key the middle linebacker and nickel defender pre snap, if they are pressed on the inside slot the dig should sit down in the void created once they turn their hips.

Hot route the backside corner route to a fade or seam if you see two high safeties bracketing that side, this keeps the safety honest and prevents an easy jump on the dig.

Pair this with Curl Flats or Y Cross earlier in a drive so the defense respects shallow crossers, then hit them with the deeper dig once they start jumping short routes.

Against zone heavy defenses, work the checkdown release out of the backfield first since the dig can get sat on by a hook zone defender sinking underneath it.
