Man coverage on the outside with no extra flow to the box is when this play is most dangerous since the numbers advantage in the run fit usually favors the offense. Zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers reading run first can still get gashed if the mike linebacker overcommits to the play side gap instead of staying square. User controlled defenders spying the QB or crashing hard down the line will eliminate the keep option, so identify any user flashing down at the mesh point before deciding whether to trust the give or the pull.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, to keep the defense honest against your pass heavy Doubles package. Check the box count pre-snap and if the defense is in a light front with six or fewer in the box, keep the ball on the zone read to attack the alley yourself. If the defensive end sits home and takes away the QB keep, hand it off and trust the zone blocking to create a natural cutback lane. Pair this with RPO Peek Slant or RPO Zone Peek from the same set so the defense has to respect both the pure run action and the RPO tag, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits. Mix in HB Counter and Inside Zone from this playbook to keep the same personnel and formation look while varying the blocking scheme, making it harder for defenders to key the run direction pre-snap.
