PA Read Boot runs a play-action rollout off Shotgun Doubles 11 personnel, with the QB faking the handoff and booting to the right behind the line. The backside slot runs a deep vertical up the seam while the frontside slot works an inside release into a shallow drag across the middle. The two outside receivers on the boot side stack a corner route from the tight end or outside receiver over an underneath flat route from the other, giving the QB a high-low read on that side. This is a play-action man beater built for the QB to read the flat defender: if he sits, throw the corner over the top, if he widens with the flat route, hit the shallow drag or dump the flat route underneath.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard on the run fake it confirms play-action is open and the boot side flat-corner combo should be uncontested. Identify the flat defender's leverage immediately after the fake, a defender sitting on the drag route opens the corner route over the top. Beware Cover 3 sky or cloud shells with a hard-charging boot side corner, this can jump the flat route and undercut the shallow drag simultaneously. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the QB on the rollout, since this play has no true checkdown protection if the QB gets flushed backward. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the best matchup, since the corner route and deep seam both isolate defenders in space.
Check the pre-snap safety alignment before the snap, single high shells favor the deep seam and corner combo while two high shells push you toward the underneath drag and flat.
Use the boot side flat defender as your primary key, this play is designed to attack whichever way that defender leans.
Hot route the backside seam runner into a shorter option against man coverage if you do not trust the deep shot, but leave it deep against zone to stretch the field vertically.
This play pairs well with Inside Zone or PA Zone Read in the same set since the run action and boot action look identical pre-snap, keeping linebackers honest.
Best called on second and medium to second and long where defenses are more willing to bite on the run fake, giving your rollout more time and space.
